Biorefinery Östrand, a company jointly owned by Finnish energy company St1 and Swedish forestry company SCA, is developing a biorefinery for production of sustainable aviation fuel and biofuels in Sweden.
By producing sustainable aviation fuel and biofuels, the biorefinery project aims to achieve significant CO2 emission savings, especially in the hard-to-abate aviation, transportation and industry sectors.
Biorefinery Östrand applied for financial support from the EU Innovation Fund for the investment project. CAPEX Advisors assisted SCA and St1 in developing the project’s financial model, as well as developing the project’s financial maturity for the grant application.
The project was granted 167 million euros, and it was chosen as one of the EU’s most important projects for green energy transition in aviation. The innovation grant enables the biorefinery project to proceed and a climate benefit corresponding to almost nine million tonnes of CO2 equivalents via sustainable fuel production within the first 10 years of operation.
