Steady Energy Oy

Steady Energy Oy, spun out of VTT, is building a heating plant in Finland powered by a small nuclear reactor. It will produce heat efficiently, safely and carbon-neutrally at a much lower temperature and pressure than conventional nuclear reactors. The company, which aims to enter the international market, raised €2 million in seed funding from VTT, Yes VC and Lifeline Ventures. Steady Energy plans to build a heating plant based on the LDR-50 reactor technology in Finland by 2030. The company will use the funding for research and development and aims to expand its funding base to build a 1:1 pilot plant powered by electric heat to demonstrate key technical functions. The LDR-50 district heating reactor is a small modular nuclear reactor that VTT has been developing since 2020.

By October 2024, Steady Energy Ltd will have signed letters of intent for the development of a district heating solution based on its product with three heating companies owned by Finnish cities (Helsinki, Kerava and Kuopio).

CAPEX Advisors has assisted VTT and Steady Energy Oy in financial modelling of the business case for the supply of district heating plants.
